ABOUT LENNY DYKSTRA

Working with textile is one of my great fascinations. I used to collect lots of fabrics all my life, and always hoped there would be time to make wallhangings.

After 40 years of teaching, 11 years in Holland (home economics and textile art), and since 1968 in Canada (piano and voice) I retired in 1997and now I have a studio, where all my fabrics are well organized and where I can indulge in their beauty and variety.

Usually I don't start with a design on paper, but with an idea in my head. From there it is like taking steps of faith again and again till the idea, or something completely different, is accomplished. I work with layering, cutting, collaging, machine stitching and embroidery. I want the fabrics to do most of the work in their variety of texture and color. I avoid painting. With my wallhangings I want to express the wonder of life and creation.

ABOUT THE STUDIO/ GALLERY
My Studio is built over our carport. Once you are in the studio you overlook my music room and garden. An enhancing addition to seeing the textiles. On the street side, you see a Lumber yard across the road where always there is activity. A great inspiration to do a lot of work in my studio.
